Three-quarters of the world population of lesser flamingos depend on Tanzanias Lake Natron as a breeding site, threatened by a large scale soda ash. ![]() In the slightly less salty water around its margins, some fish can also survive. However, today it's entirely infield and sealed with concrete to prevent any more damages to its surroundings. There is no outlet for the lake, which means it does not have anywhere for flowing out, only flowing in is possible. The Natron lake in Tanzania is indeed one of the deadliest lakes in the world, the temperature here can reach up to 140 F (Fahrenheit) and it is extremely alkaline with a pH (potential of hydrogen) of 10.5. Once, the beautiful mountain lake Karachay in Russia was the deadliest one in the world. The government built a degassing station in the lake to prevent future disasters.įinally, we would like to mention one more lake, even though it doesn't exist anymore. Once a beautiful blue lake became murky brown because of carbon dioxide saturation. This was the first known case of massive asphyxiation caused by natural events a not by men. And for those animals that do become interred here, animals don’t immediately die and turn to stone upon touching the lake. As this gas is heavier than oxygen, it stayed close to the ground, as it slowly drifted to the villages in the valley, causing death to more than 1700 people and over 3000 livestock. Lake Natron is a hotspot for beautiful life.
